Call to Vote
The upcoming election is critical for Canadians—no matter your political leanings, your vote matters. Look south of the border to understand what can happen. In the last US election, 32% of votes went to Republicans and 31% to Democrats. That means 68% of US voters did not vote for the current president. True democracy is achieved when everyone votes. Plan, do your research, and most importantly, vote. It really matters, can, and will make a difference.
Key political issues for musicians and arts workers include the following:
1. Generative Artificial Intelligence: How did GAI learn to create? Have AI machines used accessible music in violation of copyright laws? What party will work with us more favourably to protect your music so that consent is required, credit is given for the use, and you are compensated fairly?
2. Live Performance Tax Credits: Live tax credits will attract more live performance opportunities for Canadians in Canada. This will strengthen the ability of Canadian musicians to make a living in their own country, reducing dependence on foreign markets like the United States. Which party will support this initiative?
3. Diversity Equity and Inclusion: Human rights have taken a huge step backward in the US under the Trump administration. Which party will continue to protect these long-established Human Rights for Canada? Cross-border travel for musicians is of high importance on both sides of the border. Which party do you think is more likely to listen to concerns and work with our Union?
4. Trade Tariffs: Trade tariffs affect the cost of living, the exchange rate, and the job market. Which party is best positioned to stand up for Canada to counter the US administration’s attempt to hijack our economy?
5. Strengthening Public Health Care: As musician's work is precarious, and many musicians rely upon Canada’s Health Care System as it is, but still requires improvements, such as expanding Universal Public Pharma and Dental Care and establishing Universal Mental Health Care. Which leader will consider these needs for Canadians?
Your vote matters. Plan to cast a vote and make a difference. A high voter turnout equals true democracy.
