A Step Backwards in Canadian Digital Media Policy

CFM is deeply disappointed by the federal government's announcement yesterday, on the “investment” of $600 million taxpayer dollars into Canada’s broadcasting sector. These funds should be paid by foreign-owned streaming companies and tech giants who vastly profit from their Canadian Consumer base. The Online Streaming Act was designed to modernize cultural policies in Canada and ensure foreign companies paid their fair share into the Canadian ecosystem.  Streaming platforms have long since replaced traditional broadcast models, and all companies benefiting from the Canadian market should be contributing to it. The decision is concerning to our cultural sector as a whole, after our many years of consultations, advocacy and debate.  This is not a positive step toward to modernizing cultural policies, this is a step backwards and appears to be a fold towards United States pressure and corporate-friendly deals. It is a sad day for Canadians and our culture.
