National Film Board and Canadian Federation of Musicians Reach an Agreement for Musicians

April 14, 2016

Canadian Federation of Musicians (CFM) is pleased to announce they have reached a 5-year collective agreement with the National Film Board of Canada.  This successor agreement was ratified by AFM members in a recent vote which was unanimously in favor of the negotiated amendments.

As Canada's public film producer and distributor, the National Film Board (NFB) has had a long standing tradition of engaging professional Canadian musicians for productions that range in nature from documentaries, animations, alternative dramas and more.

The Canadian Federation of Musicians has had a very productive working relationship with the National Film Board of Canada for many decades. I would like to thank NFB'schief negotiator, Dominique Aubrey for her empathy towards our musicians," comments Alan Willaert, Vice-President from Canada, American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada. Her patience and knowledge of the industry was a significant factor in reaching a deal that is mutually beneficial."

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is a federal cultural agency within the portfolio of the Canadian Heritage Department. Initially known as the National Film Commission, it was created by an act of Parliament in 1939. Its mandate, as set forth in the National Film Act, 1950, is "to produce and distribute and to promote the production and distribution of films designed to interpret Canada to Canadians and to other nations."

The Canadian Federation of Musicians (CFM) is the Canadian National office of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM).  The CFM provides vital resources for Canadian musicians at any stage in their careers, on any platform, from live concert to recorded performance, broadcast and film scoring. The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) is comprised of 225 Local offices across the United States and Canada, collectively representing a membership of more than 80,000 professional musicians across the United States and Canada. The AFM/CFM has been representing the interests of U.S. and Canadian musicians for 120 years, as the representative of professional musicians in a broad range of collective bargaining and legislative actions.
