FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Toronto, ON,  Monday, March 28, 2011

The Canadian Federation of Musicians offers much deserved congratulations to the many winners and nominees of Sunday night’s 40th annual Juno Awards!  Of particular note, CFM would like to acknowledge the slew of member artists who populated this year`s list of Juno-Award winning recordings, including artists’ works that are supported by Federation members.  This year alone, 129 individual CFM members were nominated in categories across the board, with 13 members taking home 12 awards in pop, rock, country, jazz and rap.  These winners include Justin Bieber, Neil Young, Daniel Lanois, Karkwa, Johnny Reid, Shad, Matthew Good, Kellylee Evans, Christine Jensen and John McLeod.

“The Juno Awards have become an annual cultural hallmark of entertainment in music. By celebrating music through the Juno Awards over the past 40 years, Canadians also honour the rich legacy and ongoing growth of this country’s professional music community,” says Bill Skolnik, AFM Vice President from Canada & CFM Chief Executive Officer. On behalf of our more than 17,000 members, we congratulate CARAS for their remarkable impact on Canada and the Canadian music industry.”

Professional musicians living and working in Canada are the heart and soul of this country’s musical achievements. The creative contributions of CFM members like KD Lang, David Foster, Gordon Lightfoot and jazz legend Oscar Peterson have garnered the world’s attention with their record-breaking success.  Whether members are in a rock band or a symphony, are established artists or in the midst of completing their first tour, they are supported in their success by CFM`s commitment to raising industry standards and placing the professional musician in the foreground of the Canadian cultural landscape.

Juno Award winning singer-songwriter and producer Gordie Sampson is amazed at how much the AFM protects the rights of the session players.  In a recent IM Magazine cover story, Sampson spoke about his 20-year membership, “As I go along, I realize how many great things are in place through the AFM. It’s pretty powerful.”  Sampson’s enthusiastic support of AFM causes is his way of saying “thank you” for what the Federation does in support of its musicians.

Building on AFM Canada’s long and successful legacy, CFM will continue furthering the particular interests and needs of professional musicians who earn their living in this country. Everyday CFM helps thousands of musicians with any number of issues related to the recording and performing of their craft.  American Federation of Musicians, United States and Canada draws on the experience and strength of more than 90,000 musicians, with over 17,000 active members in Canada alone.
